How do I find an NHS dentist in Tunbridge Wells?

Unlike a GP surgery, dentists do not have a fixed list of local patients, and NHS Kent and Medway says on its dental page that it is unable to allocate patients to a dentist. The NHS's own advice on how to find an NHS dentist is to contact any NHS dentist directly and ask for an appointment, whether you have symptoms or just want a check-up. Because some practices offer both NHS and private care, say clearly that you want an NHS appointment. The NHS dentist finder lets you search a town or postcode for practices accepting new patients for routine check-ups or offering urgent or specialist care.

At your first visit you may be asked to fill in a registration form, but the NHS is upfront that this does not guarantee you NHS care at that practice in future. You may also need to join a waiting list. If you genuinely cannot find anyone, the NHS says to contact your local integrated care board, which manages dental services in the area and may be able to point you to appointments.

Its NHS page lists Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8:30am to 5:30pm, Wednesday 8:30am to 6:30pm and Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm, closed at weekends. Pembury Dental Surgery is at 67 Hastings Road, Pembury (TN2 4JS, 01892 823044), with hours of 8am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm Monday to Thursday and 8am to 2pm on Friday, though that page was last updated in December 2025. The High Brooms Dental Clinic, 20 Clifton Road (TN2 3AR, 01892 540990), is described on its NHS page as an NHS practice accepting patients, open Monday to Saturday with a late Wednesday and a Saturday morning session. Calverley Dental Practice is at 8 Goods Station Road in the town (TN1 2BJ, 01892 543898); its NHS page shows hours last confirmed in 2023, so ring before relying on them.

The NHS search also lists Woodbury Park Dental Surgery, Bupa Dental Care Tunbridge Wells, Bower Dental Practice, The Blockley Partnership and Aspen Dental Clinic in the Tunbridge Wells area. Use the finder for their current details and status.

What does NHS dental treatment cost?

At the time of writing (September 2026), the NHS lists three charge bands plus an urgent charge. Band 1 is £27.90 and covers an examination, assessment and advice, X-rays, a fluoride application and basic gum scaling, along with minor denture or brace adjustments. Band 2 is £76.60 and includes everything in Band 1 plus fillings, root canal treatment, extractions and more extensive gum disease treatment. Band 3 is £332.10 and covers crowns, bridges, dentures and orthodontic treatment such as braces, on top of Bands 1 and 2. Urgent treatment is charged at £27.90 and covers things like an emergency examination, temporary fillings, emergency root canal work and abscess drainage.

If you need several treatments in different bands within two months, the NHS says you pay only the highest band charge, and treatments in the same band are charged once. Most adults pay for NHS dental care, although the NHS says certain groups may qualify for free or subsidised treatment, so check the NHS page before you assume either way. These prices are set nationally and can change, so always confirm on the NHS page.

What if I need an emergency dentist?

You do not have to be registered with a practice to get urgent NHS dental care. Kent and Medway's integrated care board says any NHS dentist can be approached for urgent treatment, and its dental page says all practices in the area now offer urgent appointments, so phone and say clearly that you need an urgent one. Be prepared to ring more than one practice. Severe toothache, a dental abscess, a broken or knocked-out tooth, significant swelling and uncontrolled bleeding are the kinds of problems it lists.

The ICB also describes a centralised urgent dental route. When should I use 111 for a dental problem?

If you cannot get through or you are unsure how urgent it is, use NHS 111, which the NHS says can help with dental problems. It is free, 111 online is for ages five and over and children under five should be assessed by phone. A&E is not a dentist: Kent Community Health's guidance says urgent care units do not treat dental issues, so use the dental routes above first, and keep 999 and A&E for life-threatening emergencies or serious injuries.
