What are the best things to do with kids in Tunbridge Wells?

This is a guide to family days out that we could confirm from venue and organiser pages at the time of writing (September 2026). It is not a ranking and it is not a complete list. Some of the places families use most, such as the council's play areas and leisure centres, are described on council pages that would not open for us, so we have left out their facilities and opening times rather than guess. For those, use the council's parks and play areas and leisure centres pages. We are an independent directory and are not affiliated with the council.

Where can children play outdoors?

The Commons are the most natural playground in town. The Tunbridge Wells and Rusthall Commons describe themselves as hosting guided walks, forest school sessions and gatherings, and their events page lists Woodland Adventurers on Saturday 3 October 2026, which it calls a free forest school for children, along with fungi walks on 1 and 13 October. The Commons also say free forest school activities run in the Easter holidays. The Commons' visitor guide notes that dogs must be kept under control, that toilets are near Wellington Rocks, and that rock climbing is allowed at named spots including Toad Rock and Wellington Rocks, which older children may already know as scrambling territory.

Dunorlan Park is the town's Victorian lakeside park. The Friends of Dunorlan Park, a volunteer-run charity, say it has a café, a lake near the Halls Hole Road car park and plenty of walking paths. They also report a new Sensory Garden, and say the park hosts treasure trails, bat walks, moth mornings and model boat regattas. Their listed family membership is £15 a year, which includes free or discounted access to some events. For boat hire, the play area and opening times, check the council's Dunorlan Park page, as we could not read it.

Grosvenor and Hilbert Recreation Ground, in the north of the town, is a 24-hectare park designed by Robert Marnock and established in 1889, according to Kent County Council's heritage record. Parks and Gardens UK says it is free to enter and lists a café, a children's play area, football pitches and a bowling green. Is there anything for children at the theatres?

The Assembly Hall Theatre on Crescent Road, Tunbridge Wells, TN1 2LU, lists a family show called Halloween Spooktacular: A Fangtastic Family Show! on Sunday 18 October 2026, and its pantomime Cinderella from 12 to 31 December 2026, which it marks as a family show. Its programme changes, so use the theatre's own what's on page for times and booking, and for prices, which we have not quoted.

Trinity Theatre describes itself as an inclusive arts charity and lists a children's programme alongside its youth theatre. On its what's on page at the time of writing are Trinity Youth Theatre Story Time for autumn 2026, running on Fridays from 2 October to 4 December 2026, and Backstage Youth Theatre Workshops from 1 October to 19 November 2026. The site also lists Elf The Musical among its upcoming shows, though we have not confirmed dates or whether it suits younger children. Check the individual event pages for age guidance.

What about steam trains?

The Spa Valley Railway is a heritage steam and diesel railway running between Tunbridge Wells West and Eridge through the High Weald, calling at High Rocks and Groombridge along the way. Its website lists the next service day as Saturday 3 October 2026, with a timetable on its planning page. It also lists a Model Brick Show on 24 and 25 October and The Polar Express Train Ride in November and December. The railway says children travel free during summer periods and that well-behaved dogs are welcome without charge except in dining areas. It is volunteer-run, so phone availability varies on non-running days. We have not quoted fares, which you should confirm when booking.

What is there at Christmas?

The Pantiles lists its Boutique Christmas Markets from 13 November to 24 December 2026 on its events page, and the Assembly Hall pantomime and Spa Valley's Polar Express both run over the same weeks. Our events and markets guide covers the markets in more detail.

Are there free holiday activities for eligible families?

We could not read Kent County Council's holiday activity pages, so we cannot say whether a free holiday scheme is running in Tunbridge Wells this year, which sessions are on offer or who qualifies. The best route is to search for Holiday Activities and Food on kent.gov.uk, or ask your child's school whether your family is eligible. Do not rely on third-party listings for eligibility.
